New Posistop® X Class oil-shear brakes give up to 10X longer service life than dry clutch brakes, enabling lowest per-cycle cost

Engineered for 40 million cycles, new brakes provide higher performance and reliability while reducing wear, energy use, and maintenance/repair/replacement burden

October, 2003 - Delivering superior performance, longer service life and lowest cost per cycle economy, new Posistop oil-shear motor and holding brakes meet today's needs for 24/7 uptime reliability, higher cycle speeds and greater manufacturing precision. Engineered for 40 million cycles, Posistop X Class brakes provide up 10X longer service life than conventional dry brakes, while eliminating line stops, brake repairs and replacements. Available for 1/2 to 10 hp drives, the X Class brakes use long-proven oil-shear actuation to run cool, minimize wear and reduce load shocks, while compact multi-disk design enables higher cycle rates, greater available hp, ultra-quick 10 msec. response, and lower power demands. They can make possible higher speeds and productivity as replacement brakes, and help OEMs to design new, high-performance machines.

Value-engineered and volume produced to stock, the Posistop® X Class brakes make oil-shear advantages affordable for general braking applications. Originally developed for extreme service requirements and widely used in the automotive, mining, and lumber industries, oil-shear braking and motion control technology has been perfected over more than 30 years by Force Control Industries.

Posistop® X Class brakes transmit torque by shearing automatic transmission fluid between multiple friction discs. The recirculating fluid absorbs the heat of engagement and dissipates it through the housing. Oil-shear action minimizes wear for up to 10 time longer service life than dry brakes, while providing inherent "cushioning" to reduce shock loads on motors and other machine components. Four to five times higher thermal capacity virtually eliminates torque fade and provides excellent positioning repeatability in cycling applications.

Compact multi-disc design reduces space requirements and lowers internal inertia up to 88% for ultra-quick 10 msec. response with maximum useable horsepower. Low inertia design also saves energy by reducing high starting inrush current and associated power factor imbalance. In some cases oil-shear brakes can permit use of more economical, lower-hp drive than a comparable dry brake.

Available for double-C face and motor brake mounting, X Class brakes feature unique clamped-split quill allowing drop-in, bolt-up installation. The clamped-split quill design ensures trouble-free service in high-cycle-rate production. It eliminates play between keyway, key and input quill shaft to assure long service life. For maximum installation versatility, the X Class is available in horizontal, vertical-input down, and vertical-input up versions.
