Magna Shear motor brakes bring long life, low wear and cushioned stops to toughest marine conditions

Low-inertia design and oil-shear cushioning give ABS-certified electric motor brakes fast response, smoother stops with less wear and stress on drives

MARCH 2003 - Magna Shear electric motor brakes bring long life, low wear and cushioned stops to toughest marine applications, giving the deep six to repair and replacement frustrations. ABS-certified, the proprietary oil-shear designs deliver many times the friction material life of ordinary dry-friction units, while supplying full rated torque over the life of the brake. Oil shear action cushions engagement, smoothing away shocks and jerks to reduce stress on drives and structures. The versatile motor brakes come in seven model/frame sizes providing torque ratings from 4 to 1250 ft. lbs. for application on a wide range of marine and dockside holding, hoisting and loading equipment.

The Magna Shear's compact multi-disc design packs more torque into a small diameter, space-saving configuration, while reduced inertia provides faster response and lowers motor h.p. and energy draw when accelerating drives. Fully sealed for high dependability in difficult environments, the units feature 110-120V electric actuation with pulse modulation to reduce input power and avoid coil overheating. A direct-acting coil eliminates levers and corrosion exposure problems. Multiple springs assure reliable, balanced spring-set load holding.

Proven solutions to extreme environmental and service conditions, Magna Shear motor brakes are manufactured by Force Control Industries, the industry leader in oil-shear clutch/brake technology. Magna Shear units transmit braking torque by shearing automatic transmission fluid between multiple friction discs. The heat of braking is absorbed into the recirculating oil, not just the friction surfaces, to greatly reduce wear and extend the life of the friction discs. Extra-long springs compensate for any wear in friction material to maintain rated torque over the life of the unit, unlike conventional units where torque fades with wear.

Magna Shear brakes fit a wide range of motors, including NEMA, U-frame, T-frame, and low inertia IEC motors. Simple control logic uses motor starter auxiliary contactors, allowing brakes to run on the same standard 115V AC power as the motor starter coil. Back EMF effect from motor windings is eliminated. The spring-set brake stack is released by supplying 115V AC power to the brake coil.
