What's New: Company News Oil-shear motor brakes make "brake-downs" disappear, give longer life to high-stress start/stop drives Low-inertia design and oil-shear cushioning give Magna Shear electric motor brakes fast response, smoother stops with less wear and stress on drives, plus better energy efficiency MARCH 2003 - Magna Shear motor brakes stop the frustrations, lost production and high maintenance costs with ordinary dry-friction brakes. Proven solution to higher uptime and line productivity, plus longer motor and drive life, the fully electric Magna Shear motor brakes from Force Control Industries apply proprietary oil-shear cushioning to deliver many times the friction material life of ordinary dry-friction units and reduce stress on drives. Originally developed for high-output automotive lines, Magna Shear motor brakes provide a comprehensive technology solution to start/stop indexing, cycling and palletizing operations that tear up conventional brakes, motors and drives. Seven model/frame sizes provide torque ratings from 4 ft. lbs. to 1250 ft. lbs. Standard units are fully sealed, assuring high dependability and long service as a holding brake or cycling brake in difficult outdoor environments and indoor applications with high oil, grit, or moisture exposure. Anodized housings are available for caustic exposure or washdown. Easy to afford, install and maintain, Magna Shear units feature 110-120V electric actuation and spring-set load holding. They fit a wide range of motors, including NEMA, U-frame, T-frame, and low inertia IEC motors. Manufactured by Force Control Industries, the industry leader in oil-shear clutch/brake technology, Magna Shear units transmit braking torque by shearing automatic transmission fluid between multiple friction disks. The heat of braking is absorbed into the recirculating oil, not just the friction surfaces, to greatly reduce wear and extend the life of the friction disks. Multi-disk design reduces inertia, provides faster response, and packs more braking torque into a smaller diameter configuration that saves space and lowers motor h.p. and energy draw when accelerating drives. Simple control logic uses motor starter auxiliary contactors, allowing brakes to run on the same standard 115V AC power as the motor starter coil. Back EMF effect from motor windings is eliminated. A spring-set brake stack is released by supplying 115V AC power to the brake coil.
